Insider Says He Would Be ‘Shocked’ if Russell Wilson Comes Back to Steelers.
After two underwhelming seasons with Kenny Pickett at quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers made an intriguing move last offseason by signing veteran QB Russell Wilson, who had been released by the Denver Broncos.
Wilson had endured two rough years with the Broncos, missing the playoffs both times, leading many to believe his best years were behind him.
Despite that, he helped guide the Steelers to an 11-6 record this season, although they were eliminated in the wild-card round by the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, at 36 years old, Wilson is set to become a free agent, and speculation is swirling about Pittsburgh’s plans for him and their quarterback situation in general.
ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio recently stated that he doesn’t expect Wilson to return to the Steelers next season, saying on 93.7 The Fan, “I would be stunned—beyond stunned—if Russell Wilson is back next year.”
Wilson spent his first 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, leading them to a Super Bowl title in 2013, but by 2021, the team was in decline. He was traded to the Broncos in 2022 for five draft picks, along with Noah Fant, Drew Lock, and Shelby Harris, with many believing Denver was now a Super Bowl contender.
However, the Broncos struggled mightily with one of the worst offenses in NFL history in Wilson’s first season, leading to doubts about the wisdom of the trade.
This year, Wilson passed for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns in 11 games. But for the Steelers to make significant progress, they’ll likely need to find a younger, more dynamic quarterback.
