Vera’s Brenda Blethyn issues plea over future episodes after heartfelt goodbye to cast
Brenda Blethyn has wrapped on the final series of ITV’s Vera, with the actress admitting that she is sad to say goodbye to the cast and crew of the long-running detective drama
Actress Brenda Blethyn has shared her desire to film more episodes of her highly praised drama *Vera* as she says farewell to the cherished series.
At 78, the star of the popular ITV detective show has wrapped up its fourteenth and final season. The concluding episodes, *Inside* and *The Dark Wives*, will be presented as two feature-length installments. These episodes are set to deliver gripping murder mysteries intertwined with emotional narratives, offering a deeper look into Vera’s personal journey.
The latest series, shot across the scenic North East, will see the return of the formidable ensemble cast working closely with Brenda. The lineup features David Leon as DI Joe Ashworth, Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones as DC Mark Edwards, Sarah Kameela Impey as Pathologist Dr Paula Bennett, and Rhiannon Clements as DC Steph Duncan.
However, as this marks Brenda’s final appearance, the actress has reflected on the bittersweet feelings of bidding farewell to her colleagues, according to *Chronicle Live*. She shared: “It’s heartbreaking to say goodbye to the cast and crew. They are incredibly skilled, professional, and talented, and I truly enjoy working with them.”
“I wish there could have been an episode where I stayed at home in Kent: ‘Vera Goes South’. But, of course, the series is dyed in the wool Northumberland and the North East and I understand that’s where it has to be.”
Reflecting on her emotions while filming her last scenes, she shared:
“It was very appropriate that the last day of filming was scheduled to take place in the police incident room where so much of the drama has happened.
“I think our producer Will Nicholson contrived that. (Incidentally, that is not where the final scene of the episode takes place). You could hear a pin drop when we were filming. Then when I heard, ‘That’s a wrap.’ I was emotional. As, indeed, Vera would have been.
“There were so many people working behind the scenes, and at the end, I made sure to thank everyone,” Brenda shared. “I told them, ‘Each of us is equally important.’ While I may play the title role, it’s just one piece of a much larger puzzle, and every piece is essential.”
“Everyone’s contributions have played a role in making *Vera* a success. Of course, Vera will continue solving crimes in Ann Cleeves’ books, and fans can still enjoy all 56 episodes through TV repeats,” she concluded.
