Gerrit Cole Stays with the New York Yankees…
Gerrit Cole is set to remain with the New York Yankees for the next four years. The star pitcher opted out of his contract on Monday but will continue with the team. Cole initially signed a nine-year, $324 million deal with the Yankees before the 2020 season. The contract included an opt-out clause, which could have been voided if the Yankees added a guaranteed $36 million season for 2029. However, both sides reached an agreement to honor the remaining four years on his original contract.
Gerrit Cole has been an All-Star three times during his five seasons with the New York Yankees. Over 125 starts, he has posted a 59-28 record with a 3.12 ERA and 915 strikeouts. Cole has received Cy Young votes in each of his first four years with the team and claimed the award in 2023, leading the American League with a 2.63 ERA.
Gerrit Cole missed the first two and a half months of the 2024 season due to injury but still managed to make 17 starts. He finished with an 8-5 record and a 3.41 ERA in 95 innings. Cole was the Yankees’ most-used starter in the postseason, making five starts, including two in the World Series. He posted an impressive 2.17 ERA across 29 postseason innings. For 2025, Cole is expected to be part of the team’s starting rotation alongside Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, Carlos Rodón, and Marcus Stroman. The Yankees finished tied with the Houston Astros for the sixth-best team ERA in MLB in 2024. With his contract extended, Cole is now set to remain with the Yankees through his age-37 season.
