Clark shines in standout rookie season, She was named AP Rookie of the Year on Thursday
A national panel of sportswriters and sportscasters awarded Clark 66 out of 67 votes in the ballot results released Thursday, with Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese receiving the remaining vote.
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick from Iowa, averaged 19.2 points and a league-leading 8.4 assists per game, playing a key role in helping the WNBA achieve record-breaking attendance and gain widespread attention. Despite a slow start to the season, she found her rhythm and earned a spot as an All-Star starter. As the unanimous AP Rookie of the Year, Clark led the Fever to their first playoff appearance since 2016, finishing with a 20-20 record after beginning the season 1-8.
“I’m a tough critic of myself. I think I had a solid season, Clark said following the Fever’s first-round playoff exit. For me, the exciting part is that I feel like I’m just scratching the surface, and I’m constantly nitpicking everything I do. I want to help this franchise… I know there’s a lot of room for growth, that’s what motivates me. I feel like I can keep getting a lot better.”
Although Clark was not selected for the U.S. Olympic team—a decision that disappointed many fans—she proved her value afterward. In the 10 games following the Olympic break, the Fever guard averaged 24.7 points and 9.3 assists, leading Indiana to an 8-2 record.
