Tulane Head Coach Jon Sumrall Criticizes Officiating in Loss to Kansas State
The Tulane Green Wave faced a tough Week 2 matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats at Yulman Stadium. Aiming to solidify their position as one of the top Group of Five teams, Tulane led by 10 at halftime but couldn’t hold on, eventually falling 34-27.
Despite leading early, Tulane’s scoreless third quarter allowed Kansas State to tie the game. In the fourth quarter, Tulane briefly regained the lead with a touchdown from Darian Mensah to Alex Bauman, but Kansas State responded with a 75-yard drive and later a fumble return touchdown to take the lead for good.
After the game, Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall expressed frustration with the officiating, stating, “I didn’t get very many good explanations in the second half with the officiating. It left a lot to be desired.” A critical call with 17 seconds left, when Mensah connected with Yulkeith Brown for a potential game-tying touchdown, was nullified by a pass interference penalty. Two plays later, an interception sealed Tulane’s fate.
The Green Wave were flagged nine times for 80 yards, while the Wildcats had seven penalties for 55 yards. Tulane remains winless against Power Five teams at Yulman Stadium with a record of 0-5 and will look to rebound next week when they face the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman.
