One starter returns to action, plus other key takeaways from the latest UGA football scrimmage.
ATHENS– The Georgia Bulldogs won’t be engaging in another scrimmage like the one they had this past Saturday. While there will still be full-contact practices and the intense “Bloody Tuesday” sessions throughout the season, competitive scrimmages like the one held last weekend at Sanford Stadium are finished for 2024.
Only Georgia football lettermen, parents, and select guests were allowed to watch the internal scrimmage that took place between the hedges. The scrimmage, featuring matchups of ones-versus-ones, twos-vs.-twos, and so on, was the final one of the preseason camp. It was designed to help the coaches determine which players would be “on the bus” for the season opener against Clemson on Aug. 31. Players who are guaranteed roles or are still recovering from injuries either sat out or had limited participation. Meanwhile, those still fighting for a spot were heavily involved, catching the attention of coach Kirby Smart and his staff.
The No. 1-ranked Bulldogs will return to Sanford Stadium at least once more before facing the 14th-ranked Tigers in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Aug. 31 (noon, ABC). However, the next session will be more of a dress rehearsal for game-day operations rather than a competitive scrimmage to finalize roles for the season, which was the focus this past Saturday.
