The baseball community is mourning the tragic loss of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. Miller passed away on March 21, 2025, during a family vacation in Costa Rica. Preliminary reports from Costa Rican authorities suggest that his death was due to asphyxiation following a possible intoxication after ingesting food.
The Gardner family released a heartfelt statement expressing their profound grief:
“With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”
Miller was remembered as a beloved son and brother, known for his infectious smile and passion for sports and outdoor activities, including football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing. The family has requested privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Brett Gardner, who spent his entire 14-year Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees, retired in 2021 to spend more time with his family in South Carolina. The Yankees organization expressed their deep condolences, stating that their hearts are heavy and filled with grief upon learning of Miller’s passing.
As investigations continue, the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica is assisting the Gardner family with the repatriation of Miller’s body to the United States.
