MLB: Padres To Select Jose Iglesias, Yuli Gurriel, Martin Maldonado

The San Diego Padres have officially added veteran players José Iglesias, Yuli Gurriel, and Martín Maldonado to their Opening Day roster, reinforcing the team’s depth and experience as they approach the 2025 MLB season.

José Iglesias Joins the Infield

Infielder José Iglesias, 35, secured his spot on the roster after signing a minor league contract with the Padres on March 5, 2025. His impressive performance during spring training earned him a place on the team. Iglesias brings a solid defensive presence and a consistent batting record, having achieved a .337 average with the New York Mets in 2024.

Yuli Gurriel Bolsters First Base

First baseman Yuli Gurriel, 40, agreed to a minor league deal with San Diego in February 2025. Known for his pivotal role in the Houston Astros’ World Series victories, Gurriel offers both experience and versatility. He is expected to back up starting first baseman Luis Arraez and contribute as a designated hitter.

Martín Maldonado Strengthens Catching Corps

Catcher Martín Maldonado, renowned for his defensive skills and handling of pitching staffs, also secured a spot on the Padres’ roster. His addition emphasizes the team’s commitment to strong defense and veteran leadership behind the plate.

These roster decisions highlight the Padres’ strategy to blend seasoned talent with their existing lineup, aiming for a competitive edge in the upcoming season.
