Russell Wilson thinks this player was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ underrated standout in 2025.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver group faced challenges outside of George Pickens, but there was a bright spot: third-year receiver Calvin Austin III started to make a name for himself. He set career highs in receptions, touchdowns, and receiving yards, finishing with 548 yards and four touchdowns. On top of that, he proved to be a reliable punt returner.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, his quarterback, Russell Wilson, hailed Austin as the Steelers’ most underappreciated star.
“When you’ve got playmakers around you, it makes everything more exciting,” Wilson said. “George Pickens is a beast out there. Pat Freiermuth had a great year. But I think the biggest star of the season was Calvin Austin. His breakout and his work ethic really stood out. Those guys help you shine in ways you can’t even imagine.”
Austin’s rookie season was wiped out by a Lisfranc injury, and in his second year, he struggled to regain his previous form, often appearing a step slower than he had at Memphis. But in his third season, he finally started to realize his potential.
Now, heading into a contract year, Austin hopes to remain an integral part of the Steelers’ passing game.
