Four-Star Safety Lagonza Hayward Decommits from Tennessee Ahead of Early Signing Period
Just days before the early signing period kicks off, four-star safety Lagonza Hayward has announced his decommitment from Tennessee. While rumors about his potential decision had been circulating for some time, Hayward had previously dismissed them publicly.
The Georgia native made his decision official with a post on X:
“Thankful for Volnation and coaches for the support and trust they put in me, but I have prayed on it for a long time. Respect my decision as I will be decommitting from The University of Tennessee,” Hayward wrote.
Ranked as the No. 72 player in the class of 2025 according to the 247Sports Composite, Hayward initially committed to Tennessee on July 27. However, Georgia and Florida have remained key contenders throughout his recruitment, even after his pledge to the Volunteers.
Tennessee’s 2025 recruiting class, previously ranked 8th nationally, has now dropped to 9th, per 247Sports. Hayward’s departure leaves the Vols with three-star Sidney Walton as their only safety commit in the class. The coaching staff has been actively pursuing other options, including three-star Miami commit Timothy Merritt, as a potential replacement.
The early signing period begins on Wednesday, December 4, and runs through Friday, December 6. Tennessee’s staff will be working hard to solidify their class and recover from the loss of one of their top defensive prospects.
