Braves-White Sox blockbuster would replace Max Fried with $2.9M star

The Atlanta Braves find themselves in a somewhat unusual situation.

The team has enjoyed great success in recent years, with a strong and consistent core of players. However, this offseason could bring significant changes. All-Star pitcher Max Fried is one of the most coveted free agents available, and it’s uncertain if he will return to Atlanta.

While re-signing Fried seems unlikely at this point, the Braves have potential options to fill the gap. Zach Pressnell of Newsweek outlined six alternatives, including a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox for left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet.

“If the Braves explore the trade market, they could target one of the best arms available: Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet,” Pressnell suggested. “Acquiring Crochet would require a substantial package, but the flamethrowing southpaw could offer Atlanta one of the highest-upside starters in the league. Although the Braves’ farm system might not comfortably support such a deal, it’s a possibility worth considering.”

Crochet, also a left-handed All-Star, comes with a more affordable price tag. He is projected to earn $2.9 million in 2025 and remains under team control through 2026. While trading for him would involve parting with valuable prospects, the Braves might entertain the idea if Fried moves on.
