Mary Jane Blige, a renowned singer, songwriter, and actress from the United States, was born on January 11, 1971. Blige has earned numerous accolades throughout her career, including twelve Billboard Music Awards (among them the Billboard Icon Award), nine Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, four American Music Awards, and twelve NAACP Image Awards. Often called the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” and the “Queen of R&B,” she made history as the first person to be nominated for both acting and songwriting in the same year. Her three Golden Globe Award nominations and two Academy Award nominations include recognition for her supporting role in the film Mudbound (2017) and for the original song “Mighty River” from the same film.

Hollywood stars Julia Roberts and Zendaya bookended Saturday’s inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, giving a little stardust to an eclectic lineup that included pop icon Cher, heavy metal’s Ozzy Osbourne, hip-hop soul queen Mary J. Blige, soft rockers Foreigner and 83-year-old soul icon Dionne Warwick.

It was a five-hour-plus show that also honored hip-hop trailblazers A Tribe Called Quest, punk pioneers the MC5, the effortless dance music of Kool & the Gang, the soft rock of Foreigner, the beach bum tunes of Jimmy Buffett and the jam band fusion of Dave Matthews Band.
