Georgia WR Colbie Young arrested on charges of battery, assault on an unborn child
ATHENS, Ga.– Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested early Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child, as reported by the Athens-Clarke County jail website.
Young was taken into custody at 4:18 a.m. with bond set at $2,500 and remained in jail for at least four hours afterward.
In a statement, Georgia’s associate athletic director, Steven Drummond, said, “This is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
According to the arrest report, the complainant, identifying herself as Colbie Young’s ex-girlfriend, went to his apartment around midnight to discuss their relationship. The conversation escalated when she discovered he was on the phone with another woman. She told police that Young then grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the room before locking himself in his bedroom.
Young reportedly came out of his room after the woman received a phone call. The complainant claimed that Young then “picked her up and squeezed her torso and abdomen tightly.” The officer who responded noted that she had a bruise and discoloration on the lower right side of her chest and redness on her right flank. However, no marks were found on her arm, where she said Young had grabbed her. The woman declined ambulance transport but agreed to go to the hospital if the officer drove her.
When police interviewed Young at his apartment, he admitted to the heated argument but denied physically grabbing the woman. When questioned about her injuries, he claimed they were not caused by him.
Young’s attorney, Kim Stephens, released a statement saying, “Colbie Young was arrested after asking his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment.
He did not make any physical contact that could be considered a crime. We expect Mr. Young to be fully cleared once the investigation is complete and the truth comes out.”
Young, a senior, transferred from Miami after last season. His arrest marks the second incident involving a transfer receiver at Georgia, following the January 2023 arrest of Rara Thomas on misdemeanor battery charges. Thomas remained on the team after a plea deal but was dismissed following another arrest for battery this summer.
This is the latest legal trouble for the Georgia football program, which has seen 10 players and one staff member arrested for driving-related offenses since January 2023.
