Insider Offers Daring Forecast for the Future of Maple Leafs’ Star Forward
Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner is entering the last year of his contract, making his future with the team a topic of interest.
This offseason, Marner was involved in trade rumors, but no deals were finalized. Speculation about a possible contract extension has also circulated. However, NHL insider Frank Seravalli from DailyFaceoff.com included a bold prediction that Marner will enter free agency.
“Mitch Marner will be a standout among the 2025 free agents. The Leafs will be shifting their strategy next offseason, compelled to make significant changes,” Seravalli stated.
If Marner does leave in free agency, it would be unexpected. The star player has expressed his desire to stay in Toronto, yet Seravalli anticipates that Marner and the Maple Leafs will part ways by July 1.
Marner is finishing the last year of his six-year, $65.41 million contract. Last season, he tallied 26 goals and 59 assists for a total of 85 points in 69 games.
Marner Wants to Remain With Maple Leafs
Although Marner has been the focus of trade rumors, he has expressed a strong desire to sign an extension with the Maple Leafs.
“That’s definitely a goal. I’ve shared my love for this place and this city. I grew up here, so we’ll start thinking about that and try to work something out… It means everything to me,” Marner told reporters on May 6.
“We’re viewed almost like gods here, to be honest, and it’s something you truly appreciate. The affection from this fan base and the attention we receive is unmatched. Just look at the (NBA’s Toronto) Raptors from a couple of years ago; the love (fans) still have for many of those players (who helped them win the 2019 championship) even after they were traded. That’s the kind of love you want,” Marner added.
Drafted fourth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2015, Marner has played 576 NHL games, scoring 194 goals and providing 445 assists for a total of 639 points.
Maple Leafs Add Two Experienced Forwards
As the 2024-25 NHL season approaches, the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran forwards Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz to one-year contracts. Both players joined the team on professional tryouts during training camp.
Pacioretty’s deal is worth $873,770, while Lorentz’s contract is for $775,000. With 902 NHL games under his belt, Pacioretty expressed how meaningful it is for him to make the roster.
“It means a lot,” Pacioretty said. “No matter what was discussed earlier, it’s always surreal to step in and not know what to expect regarding the team dynamics. You feel those butterflies about whether you’ll fit in. I’m just really excited to be here.”
Lorentz, who won a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers last season, is expected to play on the Maple Leafs’ fourth line. He shared his enthusiasm about signing with Toronto.
“Officially signing and moving forward with this group is incredibly special,” Lorentz said. “Looking at the lineup, I see a lot of potential, and with the offensive talent, I believe I can find my role in the bottom six. I want to play my game and bring the experience I gained last year. This is an opportunity every kid dreams of, especially being just an hour away from home. Being a Leaf has been my lifelong dream.”
The Maple Leafs will kick off their 2024-25 NHL season on October 9, facing the Montreal Canadiens on the road.
