Astros’ Jose Altuve to Miss Remainder of Season After Medical Evaluation

Houston, TX – September 14, 2024— In a major blow to the Houston Astros, star second baseman José Altuve has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 MLB season. The decision came after a second medical evaluation confirmed his injury would require extended recovery time, according to team doctors.

Altuve, who has been a cornerstone of the Astros’ lineup for over a decade, sustained an injury during a game earlier this month. Initial tests had raised concerns about his ability to return before the end of the season, and today’s medical report has confirmed those fears. Despite efforts at rehabilitation and a second opinion from a specialist, doctors have advised against further play this year.

The team released a statement earlier, acknowledging the severity of Altuve’s injury and expressing support for his recovery. “José has been an invaluable part of our team, and while we will miss him on the field, his long-term health is our top priority,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker. “We’re confident he’ll return stronger for the next season.”

Altuve, an eight-time All-Star and former AL MVP, has been a key figure in Houston’s playoff push this year. His absence will leave a significant gap in the Astros’ infield and lineup as they aim for another postseason run. The Astros are currently in a tight race for playoff positioning, and losing their veteran leader could complicate their chances down the stretch.

Altuve, 34, has struggled with injuries throughout the season, including a recent stint on the injured list that kept him out for several games. Despite these setbacks, he managed to post impressive numbers, maintaining a .311 batting average with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs in just 88 games.

The Astros will now rely on their depth to fill the void left by Altuve. Young infielder Mauricio Dubón is expected to take over duties at second base for the remainder of the season.

Altuve expressed his disappointment in a brief social media statement, thanking fans for their support. “This is tough, but I’ll be cheering on the team and working hard to come back stronger next season,” he said.

The Astros’ playoff hopes now rest on their ability to adjust without one of their most valuable players, as they look to make a deep run in the postseason without their longtime leader on the field.
