NFL: Chiefs re-sign Smith-Schuster following his release from the Patriots
“Former Steelers wide receiver returns to Arrowhead Stadium following a season with New England.”
JuJu Smith-Schuster has rejoined the Kansas City Chiefs after being released by the New England Patriots.
During the Chiefs’ 2022 Super Bowl-winning season, Smith-Schuster led all wide receivers on the team, recording 933 yards on 78 receptions with three touchdowns, trailing only star tight end Travis Kelce in both yards and catches.
The 27-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Patriots last season but struggled with injuries and consistency, managing just 29 receptions for 260 yards over 11 games, which ultimately led to his release.
Chiefs wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown has been dealing with a shoulder injury, leaving Rashee Rice, rookie Xavier Worthy, and Justin Watson as their primary options during the preseason.
There is uncertainty regarding Rice’s future as he faces a civil court case in December, and the NFL has yet to issue any punishment related to an incident involving a car crash that resulted in multiple injuries.
Head coach Andy Reid’s decision to bring back Smith-Schuster could lead to Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, or Justyn Ross missing out on the 53-man roster later this week.
