Zverev: “It’s typical for me in the first round; sometimes I make things harder on myself.”

Alexander Zverev became the first top-4 male player in the rankings to debut with a win at the 2024 US Open, securing a four-set victory against his fellow countryman, Maximilian Marterer. It was a solid match overall, though he did drop the second set—a point that was playfully mentioned during the post-match press conference.

“I guess it’s typical of my first rounds; sometimes I make things harder than they need to be, even though I’ve been training and playing extremely well. But we all know matches are different. Normally, I’m not the kind of player who shines in the early rounds, but the key here is to keep moving forward. I’m confident in my high level of tennis, and I’ll try to display it in every match. I know my performance will improve as the tournament progresses,” said the German, who is aiming to replicate the final he reached in New York four years ago.
