The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly working on extending their star forward John Tavares, despite recent
changes in the team’s leadership. Tavares, who handed over the captaincy to Auston Matthews on August 14, is
entering the final year of his seven-year, $77 million contract.
While some speculated that this move might signal the end of Tavares’ tenure in Toronto, insider reports suggest
otherwise. Elliotte Friedman, on his “32 Thoughts” podcast, revealed that the Leafs are considering extending
Tavares’ contract, allowing him to potentially finish his career with the team. However, any extension would likely
require Tavares to accept a significantly lower salary than his current deal, as the days of his $11 million annual
average salary (AAV) are likely over.
Despite his age—Tavares turns 34 in September—Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving believes the veteran still has “a lot
of good hockey” left in him. Tavares remains a productive player, having scored 29 goals and 65 points in 80 games
last season. The Leafs’ front office is reportedly interested in retaining him, albeit on more team-friendly terms,
which would help manage their salary cap while keeping a key player in the fold.
This extension talk comes amidst ongoing debates about the team’s future direction and the composition of their
