NFL Rumors: 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk Resume Contract Negotiations Following Meeting with Shanahan

Brandon Aiyuk’s tenure with the San Francisco 49ers might not be over despite his trade request. NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared that Aiyuk recently had a meeting with head coach Kyle Shanahan and others, where they had an open and candid discussion. Schultz also mentioned that negotiations for a long-term deal have resumed, with “optimism” that Aiyuk could remain with the 49ers.

However, Schultz emphasized that the situation remains “very fluid.”

Additionally, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that while multiple teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, are still in the running for a trade, Aiyuk’s return to San Francisco is “increasingly possible.”

Aiyuk and the 49ers have been engaged in trade negotiations throughout much of the offseason, with Aiyuk officially requesting a trade in July. If a trade or a restructured contract isn’t reached, Aiyuk will play out the final year of his rookie contract, earning $14.124 million.

Recently, NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco reported that San Francisco had discussions about potential trades that would send Aiyuk to either the New England Patriots or Cleveland Browns. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that the Patriots had withdrawn their interest in trading for Aiyuk, potentially narrowing the 49ers’ options.

If the 49ers can agree on a deal that satisfies Aiyuk, they might be able to avoid a trade altogether and keep their promising young star. This would likely be the best outcome for both sides, given the success they shared last season.

Aiyuk had his best season in 2023, racking up 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while helping lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. Such a standout season justifies a substantial contract, and it appears he could secure it with his current team.
