Brent Venables Commends QB Jackson Arnold’s ‘Decision Making’ in Oklahoma’s Initial Fall Practices

The Oklahoma head coach is satisfied with Jackson Arnold’s development as he gets ready for his first season as OU’s starting quarterback.

NORMAN — Fall practice is in full swing in Norman as the Sooners finalize their preparations for the 2024 season opener against Temple on August 30.

Quarterback Jackson Arnold’s performance will be closely watched throughout the fall as he gears up for his first season as OU’s starting QB.

Brent Venables noted signs of growth in his young quarterback after just three practices of training camp.

“We’re executing at a really high level right now,” Venables said on Saturday. “Decision making is even better than it was.”

At SEC Media Days last month, Arnold mentioned he was dedicating extra time to improve the mental aspect of his game, particularly in reading defenses.

Arnold’s debut as OU’s starter in the Alamo Bowl was mixed, with three interceptions overshadowing his 361 yards and two touchdowns against Arizona.

Venables’ complex defense challenged Arnold with various coverage looks throughout the spring, preparing him for the tough SEC defenses he’ll face.

Venables credited the summer’s extra work and a more stable offensive line for Arnold’s improvement. The line has shown more cohesion since spring practice ended.

“The guys around him are playing better,” Venables said. “The offensive line is in a much better position than it was in the spring. We had some injuries and new arrivals back then.”

One of the new additions, SMU transfer Branson Hickman, praised Arnold and admitted that Arnold’s abilities influenced his decision to join Oklahoma.

“It’s been good,” Hickman said on Thursday. “Growing up in the Dallas area, I knew Jackson from high school. He’s a great player and person. I even spent time with him on my official visit.

“… You want to play with a good quarterback to have a chance to win. So, it’s been great.”

Arnold now fully commands the offense. After taking over for Dillon Gabriel in the Alamo Bowl, he has gained more experience leading his side of the ball, a development Venables and co-offensive coordinators Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley hope will continue into the season.

“Overall, leadership is a comfortable position,” Venables said. “He’s led these guys all summer and spring, so it feels more natural now.”
