Skip Johnson is set to sign a new contract with Oklahoma after being considered for the Texas A&M job.

As Texas A&M continues its coaching search, Skip Johnson is likely no longer a candidate. According to Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball, Johnson is expected to sign a new contract with Oklahoma.

Johnson was “most definitely in the mix” to replace Jim Schlossnagle at College Station, but Rogers reports he is now likely to remain in Norman. Texas A&M is now focusing on three other candidates for the position.

As Texas A&M continues its coaching search, Skip Johnson is probably no longer under consideration. According to D1 Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, Johnson is anticipated to sign a new contract with Oklahoma. Rogers noted that Johnson was heavily considered to replace Jim Schlossnagle at College Station but now seems poised to remain in Norman. Rogers also mentioned that Texas A&M is now focusing on three other candidates for the position.

Wake Forest head coach Tom Walter and Aggies assistant Michael Earley, who is set to join Schlossnagle at Texas, were also interviewed for the position this week, as reported earlier by Rogers. There are signs that Texas A&M may move swiftly in their search to replace Schlossnagle, who led the Aggies to the College World Series final before departing earlier this week.

Skip Johnson boasts a 229-153 overall record over his seven seasons at Oklahoma, including an 85-65 record in Big 12 play.

He is the latest candidate at Texas A&M to decide to stay put, alongside Virginia’s Brian O’Connor, as reported by Greg Madia of The Daily Progress on Friday morning.

Regarding other potential candidates on Texas A&M’s radar, Rogers told TexAgs that the Aggies might pursue high-profile options as Trev Alberts goes through the process of replacing Schlossnagle. This could involve reaching out to the coach who recently defeated the Aggies in the College World Series final, although it seems unlikely he will depart from Tennessee.

“He’s not leaving, but you have to reach out to Tony Vitello; he has connections to Aggies in his family,” Rogers mentioned. “You have to make the call and ask, ‘Any interest?’ Beyond that, other names worth considering would include Kevin O’Sullivan. He has been vocal about Florida needing assistance with NIL matters. If he were to join A&M, it’s rumored he could attract substantial NIL funding.”

“So I believe there are elite-level coaches out there who would have a good chance with.”
