PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ minicamp concluded with quarterback Justin Fields as a focal point. Since acquiring him, Fields’ potential has sparked intense debate, especially with training camp on the horizon, where he’ll compete with Russell Wilson for the QB1 spot.

Fields’ accuracy was a notable topic from minicamp, with multiple reports suggesting inconsistency. Insiders Mark Kaboly and Ray Fittipaldo shared similar observations, leading to widespread speculation about Fields’ performance.

However, Ray Fittipaldo recently addressed these concerns on 93.7 The Fan with hosts Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise, urging fans not to overreact to early reports. He acknowledged the accuracy issues but stressed the importance of patience at this stage.

“Can he put the ball where it needs to go consistently?” Fittipaldo asked. “From observing and talking to people within the organization, that was somewhat an issue. But I wouldn’t make it a big deal in May and June.”

Fittipaldo’s perspective offers a rational counter to the overblown reactions. The Steelers have significant plans for Fields, who, at 25, still has much to learn about being an NFL starting QB. The organization is prepared to be patient, likely more so than the media and fans.

“I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt,” Fittipaldo continued. “I want to see what he does in a different system. He had multiple OCs and quarterbacks coaches in Chicago…I want to see him for a full five, six weeks in training camp before making any determinations on his ability.”

With training camp approaching, Fields will be tested. While Wilson might have the starting job secured, Fields will strive to make it a competition. More crucially, he aims to improve his pocket play, giving the Steelers a glimpse of their potential starting quarterback for 2025 and beyond.
