Orlando Pirates Star Patrick Maswanganyi Shines at Premier Soccer League Awards

PITTSBURGH — Orlando Pirates’ standout player, Patrick Maswanganyi, earned significant prize money after winning three plaques at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards.

The South African midfielder had an impressive debut season with the Buccaneers, leading them to a second-place finish in the DStv Premiership and securing victories in both the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8. Maswanganyi, 26, scored 10 goals and registered 12 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions in the 2023/24 campaign.

According to iDiskiTimes, Maswanganyi claimed the most awards at the 2024 PSL, held virtually on Sunday, June 23. He was named the DStv Premiership Player’s Player of the Season, although he lost the PSL Player of the Season to Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Maswanganyi also received accolades as the DStv Premiership Midfielder of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

In total, Maswanganyi earned R400,000 from the awards: R200,000 for the DStv Premiership Player’s Player of the Season, R50,000 for Midfielder of the Season, and R150,000 for Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

Maswanganyi’s Orlando Pirates teammate, Relebohile Mofokeng, also had a successful night, winning both the PSL Young Player of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament.

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo praised Maswanganyi, calling him one of the greatest footballers South Africa has produced. Khumalo commended Orlando Pirates for giving Maswanganyi the platform to showcase his talents.
