Detroit Tigers prospect Jace Jung has been placed on the Triple-A injured list due to discomfort in his right wrist.
Detroit Tigers prospect Jace Jung’s path to the big leagues has encountered a setback.
The 23-year-old, drafted 12th overall by the Tigers in 2022, was placed on the seven-day injured list with Triple-A Toledo due to discomfort in his right wrist. Jung bats left-handed but throws with his right hand.
The Tigers did not provide further details about the extent of the injury.
In 2024, Jung has posted a .270 batting average with 11 home runs, 47 walks, and 64 strikeouts in 64 games for Triple-A Toledo, covering 283 plate appearances. His on-base percentage stands at .465 over 16 June games, but in his last six games, he has only managed 2 hits in 19 at-bats, equating to a .105 batting average.
MLB Pipeline ranks Jung as the Tigers’ third-best prospect.
Jung was removed from the Mud Hens’ starting lineup on Thursday.
He has started 43 games at third base, committing 11 errors in 104 chances. However, his defensive prowess shines more at second base, where he earned a minor-league Gold Glove last season.
However, the Tigers moved Jung from second base to third base during the previous Arizona Fall League season due to second baseman Colt Keith’s limited arm strength resulting from a prior shoulder injury, restricting him to the right side of the infield for the Tigers.
Since shifting to third base, Jung has encountered difficulties defensively. Additionally, he has struggled with hitting high-velocity fastballs on offense.
Jung is batting .235 against fastballs registering at least 93 mph, with an expected batting average of .181. This performance is inferior to his Triple-A teammates Parker Meadows, who hits .344 with an expected average of .308, and Spencer Torkelson, who hits .286 with an expected average of .253.
When facing fastballs at 95+ mph, Jung’s batting average drops to .154, with an expected average of .166. This poses a significant concern to monitor upon Jung’s return from his wrist injury.
