Tony Vitello speaks to media before College World Series Semifinal rematch against Florida State

Tony Vitello addressed the media ahead of Wednesday’s semifinal rematch against Florida State in the College World Series.

Top-ranked Tennessee is set to face No. 8 Florida State in the College World Series semifinals, a rematch of their exciting opening-round game. Head Coach Tony Vitello spoke to the media ahead of the Vols’ matchup, discussing whether it helps to play teams they have already beaten and the advantages of having two days off.

“I think it gives you some understanding of what to expect, but each day is unique, especially here,” Vitello said. “Everyone you face will bring a different starting pitcher, different relievers, and a different mindset. Every day has its own flavor.”

“Monday’s the big one. Here, you get into a routine with a day off in between games, so you just roll with it. There’s been a lot of emotion lately, so the mental and physical fatigue isn’t something these guys can’t handle, especially in that stadium. It helps reset and heal any minor injuries. Yesterday was important, and today we got back into our routine and normal business,” Vitello added.

Vitello also provided an update on center fielder Hunter Ensley’s availability for Wednesday’s game. Ensley exited Sunday’s game against No. 4 North Carolina after colliding with the center field wall following an outstanding catch.

“He’s improving day by day; that’s the straightforward answer. He looked better today than he did on Monday. It was beneficial for him to have a recovery day after Hoover on Mondays. Today, he was back at practice and participated in all activities. We didn’t push him to go full speed through everything, but he was involved in most of what we did, just not quite at his usual intensity,” Vitello explained.
