A two man battle is emerging for the second cornerback as falcons..

As the Falcons break for summer, a two-man race is emerging for the second cornerback spot.

During offseason practices, Mike Hughes and Clark Phillips III have been vying for the Falcons’ No. 2 cornerback position.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Who will start at cornerback opposite A.J. Terrell?

This question has been central throughout offseason activities and will persist into training camp. So far, Mike Hughes and Clark Phillips III have alternated reps at the second starting cornerback spot.

While both players share the broader objective of strengthening the Falcons’ secondary, the primary focus now is on securing the starting role.

“Friendly competition brings out the best in all of us,” Hughes said. “Embracing that will benefit everyone.”

Hughes initially played with the first team in May’s media-open practice. Phillips then took over in the subsequent two weeks, first when Terrell missed a voluntary practice and later during Hughes’ absence. Most recently, during the Falcons’ mandatory minicamp, both Hughes and Phillips saw time with the starting unit.

In his first season with Atlanta last year, Hughes frequently played as a nickel back while also contributing as a special teams returner. This season, Hughes is focused on contributing wherever needed.

“I love to win, so whatever I can do to help my team win,” Hughes said, “I’m all in for it.”

With no clear leader emerging as minicamp concluded on Wednesday, the competition for the starting cornerback position will continue into training camp in late July.
