Celtic are expected to sign a centre-back in this summer transfer window. Liam Scales was the club’s most regular option in that area of the pitch over the course of the 23/24 campaign. That was largely due to Cameron Carter-Vickers’ fitness problems. When fit and available, the American international is considered an automatic starter for the Hoops.
The same cannot be said about Scales though, who has drawn a decent bit of criticism during his run as a starter. There are many who believe that Celtic need to bring in some competition in that position.
Interestingly, rumours are doing the rounds online that Carl Starfelt has spoken to Brendan Rodgers regarding a Celtic return. It is unclear how accurate that is.
But if Starfelt does actually want to return after spending a season at Celta Vigo, it is something Celtic should consider if possible at the right transfer fee. He and Carter-Vickers formed a brilliant partnership in the heart of defence over Ange Postecoglou’s two seasons as manager of the club.
£5 million centre-back linked with Celtic return
Starfelt left last summer to join Celta Vigo for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £5 million. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Swede.
The rumour is certainly an interesting one considering Celta Vigo were able to avoid relegation, something which had seemed like a real possibility at one point in time. On an individual level, Starfelt played in the majority of games as a starter for the La Liga side.
Thus, it does not make much sense for him to want to leave the club at this point. But stranger things have happened in football and there could be more than just on-pitch reasons. Let’s if the speculation surrounding a Starfelt return turns out to be accurate or not.
