Insider Suggests Yankees Could Reunite With Star at Trade Deadline
The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has been impressive this season, but there’s still room for improvement.
The Yankees are shaping up to be strong World Series contenders, despite missing one of their key players. Gerrit Cole, the 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner, has yet to pitch this season but is expected to return soon, providing a significant boost to the rotation.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees will likely seek to bolster their depth. Interestingly, ESPN’s Buster Olney mentioned New York Mets pitcher Luis Severino as a potential trade target.
“With teams increasingly relying on relievers and injuries to starters being common, there might be few starting pitchers available at the deadline,” Olney noted. “Severino, who has a 3.22 ERA in his first 10 starts with 50 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings, would be a valuable addition. He’s refined his sinker and addressed past issues with tipping pitches.
“His contract is also manageable. Severino signed a one-year, $13 million deal aiming for a comeback season before re-entering free agency. The Mets might even cover his salary for a better prospect return, similar to their approach with Max Scherzer last summer. Severino’s experience in New York and the playoffs makes him a good fit for many teams, including the Yankees, if they face injuries.”
Severino, a two-time All-Star with the Yankees, was once a top American League pitcher. Although injuries have affected his career, he is now healthy and regaining form.
If Severino remains healthy and the Mets decide to trade him, the Yankees should consider reaching out.
