The Atlanta Falcons should consider acquiring a former rival player
Michael Thomas was heavily criticized by Atlanta Falcons fans for being a player who only ran one route. It’s true that Thomas often ran slants and variations designed to get the ball in his hands and let him make plays. Drew Brees excelled at delivering the ball to Thomas with perfect timing, and the receiver capitalized on these opportunities. While there is some validity to the critique of his limited route tree, the fact remains that Thomas was a star player in the league. At one point, he was mentioned alongside Julio Jones and Antonio Brown as one of the best receivers in the NFL.
Since then, his high usage rate and injuries have derailed his career. Now a free agent, Thomas is seeking a new team to prove he still has something left. Signing with Atlanta would be an intriguing development, as the two franchises are heading in opposite directions.
Sean Payton and Drew Brees often outplayed Atlanta, so taking one of the key players from their era as the Saints approach a rebuild would be fitting.
Beyond the storyline and rivalry, it makes sense for the Falcons’ depth chart. Atlanta lacks depth at receiver, with Drake London, Darnell Mooney, and Rondale Moore filling the top spots. Beyond London and Mooney, any position could be up for grabs, allowing Thomas a potential path to the third spot on the depth chart.
Seeing Michael Thomas in an Atlanta Falcons uniform would be odd and slightly unsettling. However, it would mean taking a key player from a division rival and giving a motivated Thomas the opportunity to earn a contributing role and seek revenge for how his time in New Orleans ended.
